7 Reasons To Buy Sustainable Jewellery
A quick scroll on Instagram or Youtube and you will be bombarded with millennials making a difference with their tiny houses, permaculture gardens, and urban jungles. Everywhere around you, new practices are introduced that are healthy to the environment and at the same time, uplifting the community without compromising the growth of either.
This is called SUSTAINABILITY.
Sustainability is not just a temporary phase that is trending today but a philosophy we should all adopt to define the way of our lives. As we prepare to bid goodbye to the disaster that was 2020, we are not far from the realisation that if we as humans need to sustain, we have to keep our environment thriving too.
So with all that is going on in the world, this comes as no surprise that the philosophy of Orionz was founded on the conflux of ethics and aesthetics. We could not let sustainable fashion be restricted only to organic cotton or recycled polyester. We had to take the experience forward with our jewellery brand and make sustainable consumption an accessible option for those who are shopping for accessories as well.
How are we doing it?
Our green practices revolve around all the stages of our product’s life cycle – from its designing to the delivery. Broadly they are divided into four sections:
Repair, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
All our jewellery is made from a mix of new, old, re-used and up-cycled materials, and each handmade piece references a unique time and place in the collective human consciousness.
The brand's designers work with local artisans on only a few key designs in small quantities, meaning that they sell everything they produce, reducing leftover waste. We treat jewellery with the idea that it reflects personal taste and won't go out of style in a matter of months.
With the rise of mindful consumption habits, people are increasingly questioning the origin of everything they are purchasing. And why not? We have all heard horrid stories about sweatshops and child labour.
In the imitation and costume jewellery market, the background of jewellery creation is most often left unclear. And we couldn’t let the same happen with our products.
So we decided to keep the source story of all our products completely transparent. The core principle of sustainable fashion is the adoption of best production practices and guaranteeing the safety of all the stakeholders involved.
Our pieces are proudly produced in Mumbai. They are handmade by our in-house local artisans who work alongside our trained designers to create exquisite timeless pieces of jewellery.
Vocal for Local
Besides supporting local businesses we also create employment opportunities in India. We strongly believe in the theory of self-reliance and maximising the use of all the resources available in the local market to create products of international standard.
Indigenous craftsmanship is an important aspect of our product creation. Because we not only want to keep the knowledge of jewellery making alive but help it evolve with the modern market trends in mind.
If you are even mildly conscious about the environment, you know that plastic is a nuisance. And single-use plastic is even worse! Therefore, while designing the packaging for our product, our foremost concern was to discourage the use of single-use plastic and its wastage. In fact, we even advise our delivery partners to refrain from using it as much as possible.
This is our way of reducing the usage of this harmful and toxic material that not only harms humans but also affects everything from the groundwater to marine creatures.
A fairytale ending to the story of sustainability...
It can’t happen WITHOUT YOU! Yes, sustainable fashion is not just about the production process but also about sustainable consumer habits. The time has come when fast fashion needs to take a backseat. We have to start questioning these basics before we make each and every purchase.
- Do we really need this?
- Where does it come from?
- Is it produced ethically?
We hope that if we walk on this path together, we will welcome clean and green earth again very soon!
